The English actor, singer and songwriter was successful as rock and roller, on stage and on screen. As a musician, he reached a dozen placements in the top 40 of the UK singles charts between 1959 and 1962, including No. 1 hits. With his partner Leslie Bricusse, Newley wrote oFeeling Goodo (the song was made famous by Nina Simone and was covered by many well-known artists) and in 1964 the title song for the film Goldfinger (alongside John Barry). Bricusse and Newley were nominated for the Academy Award (Best Soundtrack, Willy Wonka & the Chocolate Factory, 1971). Newley starred in over 25 films, acted in countless recordings, many TV shows and musicals such as Dr. Dolittle and The Roar of the Greasepaint, The Smell of the Crowd with. Newley wrote the musical Stop the World - I Want to Get Off with Bricusse. He also directed and starred the show, which earned him a Tony Award nomination for Best Actor in a Musical.
