Heatmisers Cop and Speeder takes a few steps away from the hooky orientation of both its Yellow No. 5 EP and 1993s Dead Air - the dark and only vaguely indie rock constructions it explores has the blues- and soul-based edge of its peers like AFGHAN WHIGS, lending a sense of depth and sophistication to the record thats occasionally preferable to the punchier, angrier sound of its first two Frontier Records releases. Co-songwriter and guitar player Neil Gusts knack for anthemic choruses infused with coiled passion makes the FUGAZI comparison particularly appropriate.
