If High Places' recent new releases have proven anything, it's that the band has been well suited by their recent move to Los Angeles. Warmer air and a proximity to nature have reinvigorated the band, and The Village Voice says of their recent LP, Bad news, folks: This new High Places album is easily their best yet... their L.A.-derived High Places vs. Mankind effortlessly trounces its New York predecessor, and called their new material really rad in a way you never really thought of High Places as being rad.?It all began with High Places' Late Bloomer, a video track and one half of a split release with Soft Circle last summer, followed by the digital single and video releases of I Was Born on Halloween. Another new track, Can't Feel Born, came in the spring, and now High Places are quickly following up the new High Places Vs. Mankind album with the Can't Feel Born EP, a limited 12 of exclusive tracks and remixes.?The I Was Born single demonstrated Rob Barber and Mary Pearson using a new guitar-centric instrumentation that would be featured on High Places vs. Mankind. A faster pace and darker tone also seem to permeate through the singles and this new 12 collects these tracks as well as their unheard counterparts. As on the album, Mary Pearson's vocal are less effected and more present, but many aspects of the High Places sound and aesthetic remain intact. One hears dance rhythms, stereo effects, accessible melodies, dub influence, and as always, a love of layering and of combining the unexpected into something cohesive and new.??The 12 is pressed on 150 gram opaque colored vinyl (white with a slight touch of blue) in an edition of 1,000 copies.
