A tremendous piece of film music, harkening back to a seemingly lost, jazzier era of scoring - Laura Karpman finds beauty in sadness, and poetry in the absurd, as she sonically navigates the world of author Thelonius 'Monk' Ellison. Cord Jefferson's debut feature tells the story of Monk's head-on collision with the expectations of him as a black writer, as his satirical and cynical invention of a nom de plume accidentally brings momentum to his career, all in the shadow of tremendous grief within his family. The subject matter requires an incredible balance of tone, which Karpman executes masterfully.
