Coupler's America in the Coming Age of Electronics is the first solo effort from Ryan Norris, keyboardist/guitarist for Lambchop, Cortney Tidwell, Kort, Hands Off Cuba, et. al. The project gives Norris an outlet to explore his personal musical obsessions more fully, from his fascination with ambient, electronic music and sampling, to chance operations, Oblique Strategies, soundtrack music and smoky jazz. A somber listen, America in the Coming Age of Electronics is a deeply personal album. It may seem odd to say that instrumental music, being completely abstract, is about anything in particular. Nevertheless one can sense in its haunted textures the deep emotional trauma and loss this record was an attempt to heal. Some of the influences evident throughout its length are the motorik pulse of Cluster and the solo work of that band's members Moebius and Roedelius, as well as Brian Eno's ambient textures, Miles Davis' electric period, the vocal work of Ligeti, and the mountaintop mysticism of Popol Vuh.?Side One 1.
